Survey West Collaborative

Sur­vey West Col­lab­o­ra­tive is an on-going project between artist Jill New­man and Bari Ziper­stein. Both edu­cated in West Coast art and con­cep­tu­al­ism at CalArts, they exam­ine the inter­sec­tions of progress, inge­nu­ity and archi­tec­ture through art pro­duc­tion, cura­tion and edu­ca­tion outreach.

The duo’s first cura­to­r­ial project is Site as Sym­bol at the Fel­lows of Con­tem­po­rary Art (FOCA) in 2011. The project is funded by FOCA’s Curator’s Lab Award and includes two site-specific events: Evening of Pro­jec­tions with Pat O’Neill and Ply­ing the P.E. Trail with urban theorist Claude Wil­ley. SWC debuted their first pub­lic art project, This House Has a Bright Future, at Side Street Projects in 2011. It includes a series of children’s work­shops and is made pos­si­ble in part by the Pasadena Arts & Cul­ture Com­mis­sion and the City of Pasadena Cul­tural Affairs Division.
